The story takes place around 1968. Its a story about an Infantry Platoon fighting in the jungles of Vietnam and the burden, both physical and emotional, that they must carry. These modern day warriors were outfit with every atom of equipment you could imagine. Most of what the passs carried was largely rigid by necessity, such as can openers, pocketknives, helmets and flack jackets (OBrien 281).  The combined cargo of these items was between 15 and twenty pounds (281). Some additional items they carried were determined by consecrate and field specialty and included umteen heavy items uniform radios, weapons, and ammunition (283).  Some items they carried were because of superstitions (287). One soldier carried a dass foot while a nonher carried a throw that had been cut from the dead VC body (287). They overly carried items for emotional puff such as a account book or a pair of a girlfriends pantyhose (287).
